USA Global Link deal with 3Com
Santa Clara 3Com Corp. has signed a letter of intent to sell at least $100
million in computer networking equipment to USA Global Link Inc., the largest
provider of international discount long-distance service.
The agreement calls for 3Com, the No. 2 networking company, to supply USA
Global with 500 of its remote access concentrators over a three-year period.
The concentrators are used to route incoming voice and data calls.
3Com and competitors like Cisco Systems Inc. and Ascend Communications
Inc. are aggressively pursuing business with telephone and Internet service
providers, which are expected to spend more than $7 billion on networking
equipment in 1998, 30 percent more than in 1997. (Bloomberg)

Tim,

You know that I'm a lousy market timer (heck, my blankmind contest picks are quickly approaching the depths of yum and dive).

Given this problem, I only do well when I look long term and pick stocks with the best fundamentals. So, even if the market is getting ahead of itself, I can live with a position that is more equity than cash, at least if the equity is in the companies that I want long term. You have a different, short term, perspective in which a big cash position seems to make sense.

Tim:

I think that you are right to be cautious and concerned. So am I. We have to be more stock specific and more choosy in this market. Buy a little bit Asnd and come onboard.
