Our founders put slavery into the Constitution.
This was to appease the South, who was overly reliant on slave labor.

Only after the bloodiest war in American history was slavery finally banned.

By the way, Sdgla is correct in pointing out that the Confederates were all Democrats.

Even after the death of the Confederacy, the racist South continued to be Democrats all the way until the latter half of the 20th century.
