Brazil could be an example to us…. Boy, we’ve come a long way — the wrong way.

In the end, it all comes to the degree of resourcefulness of a given political system. Rome - which survived as a Republic for 500 years - in their Constitution had a provision for an office of a Dictator. The Dictator would be appointed by the Senate for a period of 6 months - and would be tasked with solving a situation which could not be solved through normal political channels (Think about our situation with regard to elections. Looks like our political mechanisms cannot solve it).

The Dictator - for the duration of his office - in many ways was above the law. He wasn’t obliged to follow the law and traditions - only to clean things up - so things could return to normal. Usually, the Dictator accomplished his task in under 6 months - and surrendered his powers before the term was over.

The only time they started getting into trouble with this dictatorship business was towards the end - when the leaders of the day were becoming increasingly powerful - and got into the game of getting the Senate to offer them longer terms - or even “dictatorship for live”. Sulla was the last dictator to resign his powers and walk away. Julius Caesar was killed. Augustus was also offered a “for life” deal, but he declined - he preferred to be the head honcho from behind the scenes.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting anything. But, we are having difficulties. We can’t agree on anything. Small electoral victories have been saving the day for a long time - but… we can’t even trust our elections anymore. Hopefully, there is still enough respect for the country, the system - and the Constitution - to agree on cleaning up the way we conduct our elections.
