I don’t think Zelensky hates Russia - at least, not until recently. From what I read, he grew up in a Russian speaking household. He hardly says anything in Russian these days, but - even earlier during the war - he spoke Russian often, and without any accent.

During the presidential elections he received close to 74% of the popular vote - while running on a “peace ticket” - promising to implement the Minsk accord and to make peace with Russia. That, BTW, reflects the mood of the broader Ukrainian public - most of them never wanted this war, and abandoned Poroshenko for an outsider who promised peace.

I read in in several places that after he was elected, the radicals (of the Azov Battalion type) explained to him that if he “betrays Ukraine” - he would lose more than just his job.

The young man got the point - and changed course.
