Yup. That's the normal script.

If you believe that markets are forward looking (debatable), then we'll either hit bottom in Feb/April not too far from the recent lows. Or hit bottom in H2 way below here.

I really would prefer the former.

I've been thinking along the lines of your comment "So there must be a trigger that starts the pivot." The markets are clearly vulnerable right now, and it just seams to me this is around the time something unexpected happens that really kicks things off one way or another. Could be some finance event like a big bank fail, or geopolitical, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get something shocking over the next few months.

Bad earnings reports over the next few quarters are expected, job market issues expected, all the impacts of increased interest rates expected. I'm wondering what the unexpected event will be?
