Thats for preventing the surgeon from drooling into an open body cavity. Thats why they call them surgical masks LOL!!!!

Once again using common sense. Which you seem to lack.

The mask does stop saliva (spit). That is why surgeons wear them while performing surgery.

After they are done they are placed in bio hazard containers, not thrown on the sidewalk or put in regular trash.
