I few years ago I went through a period when I read everything I could find about Rome. Even listened to a course in our local university. One thing I learned, inter alia, was that the Romans were very smart and artful about propaganda. Augustus was especially serious about it. He had a veritable army of agents who brought him information - and spread gossip and news, ‘modified’ in a way that served his purposes. All governments and rulers always had the best propaganda structures they could put together. In our times, we have the technology that can construct complete airtight alternate realities. Sometimes I wonder what will happen if the “Russia losing” narrative falls on its face. That would be yet another big rusty nail in the coffin of any trust between governments and the public.
