The article already mentioned that America and Europe offered free mRNA vaccines:
European and American officials have offered free mRNA shots to help ease China's COVID burden. Beijing has insisted on homemade vaccines based on inactivated virus technology, which are effective at preventing severe disease and hospitalization, but only at higher doses, according to recent studies. Mao rejected the Western assistance, saying Chinese vaccines are "in adequate supply."
I forgot whether my neighbor, who went back to China in the fall, actually got the Pfizer vaccine while he was here in the States. In 2021 he considered it but ultimately declined because he wanted to stay consistent with the Chinese vaccine regimen.

Last time I heard from him, he was stuck in his apartment once again, but only because of the COVID surge that followed the lifting of lockdowns. I never bothered to ask him whether he regretted not getting the Pfizer vaccine, partly because I didn't want him to get into any political trouble. WeChat isn't exactly a platform known for safeguarding privacy ...
