Mark - Re: "Is there anything to prevent S3 from purchasing the assets of another dissolving company - OPTi, and doing something similar?"

Nothing at all to prevent it. But look at what you have - a graphics company back on its heels and a chip set company that is going out of business. Add them up and what do you have to compete with a company with Intel's resources and stature and momentum?

In early 1997, Cyrix's MediaGX was released and nobody whined when that company combined CPU, graphics and audio. Compaq endorsed it.

I said at that time - this legitimized the concept of the CPU manufacturer usurping all PC system functions and going after the whole enchilada.

And now - Intel is merely following that path.

Re: " combining the i740 with the 440BX -"

This is the "Whitney" chip set. My guess is that it will appear early in 1999 - with a slim chance late this year. I don't know what the cost will be - but I suspect about $70 give or take $10. Combining graphics and chip set, this will be a "wash" in price but save component count and board space. Performance will also improve substantially due to the 0.25 micron process. The current i740 and 440BX are built on the 0.35 micron process.
