To All: DSC Takes GSM to the Arctic Circle DALLAS, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- DSC Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: DIGI) announced today that DSC's cellular infrastructure division, Celcore, is working with TELE Greenland A/S to test and evaluate a DSC GSM system in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. DSC's GSM system in Greenland consists of a GlobalSwitch(R) and three GlobalCell(R) base stations. Testing is taking place in and around Nuuk, located on the western coast of the country. The GlobalSwitch is connected to the PSTN via C7 ISUP trunks. The DSC GSM system is designed expressly for applications such as TELE Greenland's, where service for a small subscriber base may not be cost-effectively delivered by traditional GSM architecture. "We are very pleased with the opportunity to work with TELE Greenland," said Tom Berger, vice president, DSC cellular infrastructure division. "The TELE Greenland project is a tremendous opportunity for DSC to demonstrate that GSM systems can be cost-effectively deployed in low-subscriber density markets." Greenland is the largest island in the world, with a surface area of 2,175,600 square km. It is 2,760 km from north to south and 800 km from east to west. The total population is 55,000, spread over 16 towns and 70 settlements. The city of Nuuk is home to approximately a quarter of the population, at 13,000 people. TELE Greenland A/S, the national telecommunications company, is owned by the Greenlandic Home Rule Government. The company has a concession for all telecommunications in Greenland and offers a wide range of advanced telecommunications services to 99 percent of Greenland's populace throughout the country. TELE Greenland was established in 1925. Today the management is situated in Nuuk and is represented by 20 local stations nationwide. A total of 400 people are employed in Greenland and an additional 50 reside in Denmark to support TELE Greenland's installation division. DSC's GSM system is comprised of the GlobalSwitch, GlobalCell base station, and Network Management System (NMS). With the smallest footprint on the market, the GlobalSwitch integrates standard network elements such as Mobile Switching Center (MSC), Base Station Controller (BSC), Home Location Register (HLR), Visitor Location Register (VLR) and Authentication Center (AuC) into one compact cabinet. Capable of handling up to 10,000 subscribers, the GlobalSwitch can be deployed as a new system or as expansion of existing networks. Multiple GlobalSwitches can be networked together to provide higher capacity. The companion GlobalCell is available in two versions and both can be configured for sectorization. The smaller GC-2 supports two transceivers while the larger GC-6 supports up to six transceivers. In addition, the NMS integrates the functionality of OMC-S (operations and maintenance center - switch) and OMC-R (operations and maintenance center - radio) with easy-to-use graphical user interfaces. The GlobalSwitch and GlobalCell products will be on display February 17-19 at the GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, at booth number G3. Celcore is a division of DSC Communications Corporation.
