Interesting ... My family's biz in Montreal employed MANY Portuguese.. They came poor.. all quit school young .. gave all dough home.. got married.. got a furnished house to start.. was very different from Quebecois .. They gave up wildness of youth for security.. seemed happy .. Very strong work ethic.. where did the Portuguese go wrong in Brazil ?

and BTW ALL were within 3-6 months fully bilingual French/Portuguese.. many also in English but were less adept than the Italians at the multilingual status.. but not by much .. so not dumb folks at all .. plus very strong in the trades as were Italians .. Putting many French to shame

I might add many Francophones had a redneck attitude a firsters ...

but like the Springsteen tune.. You Don't work you don't get paid
