Jim if you think Dellheads are coming up with these numbers based on some well thought out number-crunching, you got another thing coming, be it Basic or Diluted not gonna make much difference. At least in my case, can't speak for the rest of them, uh-ho i just did, didn't I.<ggg>. YOU MADE A GOOD POINT THOUGH.

Jim, your concerns are the same as mine. This quarter more than any in the past we are going to get very strange estimates from the thread.

Because of the new accounting rules which most aren't aware of it will be almost impossible to pin down the number of shares used in the calculation as most aren't doing a calculation. I suspect most are picking a number out of the blue based on a feeling or because the like the number they are picking.

I expect to have Dell report both a non-diluted and a diluted earnings figure.

I'll compile the data but due to the complications this quarter I don't know how clear it will be.

It is a fun exercise, anyway Michael's number is the only one that counts!

Pat

Jim,
Hi!!! <<<the earnings estimates presented so far are for the most part inscrutable...>>>>

Absolutely,.......I picked 88cents....because I'm a thirty year fan of the Philadelphia Flyers and I love the way Eric Lindros plays.....also, any number that Dell throws out there this qt. will be great...and I do expect a great number based on all the info that has flowed out of mouths of the managemt....
Best, Kemble

Jim, I'm all for scrutable estimates. If you provide me with an estimate I'll scrute it! <VBG>

Jim, I need help on how to compute the diluted earnings.

I am coming up with .89/share basic based on the following:

$3.58 Billion Revenues
23.5% GM
345 Million #weighted average

Now in November 1995 Dell had 100 million shares for a weighted average. In todays number that is equivalent to 400 Million shares and would result in .77/share diluted with everything else being the same, if that is how the diluted calculation is made.

If you could explain how the diluted earnings is going to be calculated it would be helpful.

Thanks, Pat
