Decades ago, I learned that when people are like that, it's because they have hidden motives which they don't like to disclose, or themselves might not have insight into their cognitive processes to understand themselves. We all operate from rules of thumb and operating concepts, but when confronted with reality or ideas have varying abilities to understand different facts and ideas and change our minds. For example: communicationtheory.org Of course intelligence [and lack of it] is one aspect. But there's a lot more to it. I think that's how we get to Mutually Assured Destruction. The obtuse, obdurate, obstinate, bloody-minded, true-believers would rather die than change their minds, see a different point of view, etc. The same thing happened in World War I and even while commemorating it, with much virtue signalling, bugle blowing, strutting, saluting and marching World War III was being promoted and prepared and had in fact started almost exactly 100 years after 1914 with the coup in Kiev. I'm curious about what will happen. It's fascinating to see whether Greenspirit, Jacob, Tim and co will be happy when the mirved ICBMs come swooping into a town near them and whether they continue their ideas right up to then. I'm hoping for a gradual escalation into full MAD, with a truce after half a dozen, but I guess "use it or lose it" will mean a very rapid [half hour] launch window will be taken and done. The USA and Euroserfs have a LOT more to lose than does Russia, so it makes sense that they should chicken out. Putin has thrown the steering wheel out the window in this game of chicken. USA has to decide when to chicken out, or go full MAD. If they chicken out, which they should do, nothing much at all happens. Donetsk, Luhansk etc stay Russian. So does Crimea. The Nordstreams get fixed. Life goes happily along, no problem. If they go MAD, USA and Eurostan and UK and much of Russia are obliterated. But even with thousands of atomic bombs over Russia 99% of it will be untouched and the peasants will just carry on as usual. But USA/Eurostan can't function with 90% obliteration because they are concentrated with high systems dependency. The Preppers of USA will do okay for 1, 2, 5 years. But even they will be down to subsistence survival. Heck, the survivors from Russia could likely just walk into Eurostan and take over the farmland from the few survivors. Or Africans will swarm in. Or Indians or somebody who had the sense to NOT go MAD. Quite a significant proportion of people would rather die than change their minds, give in, face reality. Unfortunately, those are the kind of people who get to be the boss all too often, because being the boss is what really matters to them in life. We see it right here in SI. Interesting. Mqurice
