--But her critics — mostly men — have raised doubts about the details of her recollections and accused her of being a fabulist.--

u.s. journalism, er... cartooned fictional narrative, has become a toxic mess.

otoh, i respect your mother's perspective.
the newspaper's disqualification of men does not do her honor, imo.

A paragraph from the translated letter from my distant relatives I received. I am not going to say anything.

"During this bad time after the second world war the (half-) sister (Elisabeth name) of (my grandma) sent very often a lot of food and provisions from Canada which was welcome to us every time. Wilhelm's mother (Elisabeth name) told us a lot of food and provisions from Canada which was welcome to us every time. Wilhelm's mother told us a lot of her sister and that (my grandpa) emmigrated to Canada in 1928 and that the family followed in 1929. (my grandma) and (my grandpa) have always been in contact to Elisabeth and our family by writing letters. Elisabeth told us also that she got a letter in 1968 that her brother-in-law (my grandpa) died."

Btw, NYT butchered the interview to suit own narrative. No surprise and yet amazingly so.
Oh well.

Re <<u.s. journalism>>

also, turns out, mama never said anything during the interview re Xi, HK, even as both items were mentioned in the book's prologue, and the reporter got the Great Leap Forward and Land Reform mixed up, a mistake / deliberate mistake mama would never have made

the whole interview piece is a weaponisation by NYT by stitching together stuff

be that as it may, certainly publicity albeit bs publicity
