"Just when I start to think you have a brain, you come up with this nonsense post"

Robert,

Actually, most of friends and co-workers do not consider me to be a complete idiot. Apparently I even had you fooled for a few minutes!

I think that a 44mm2 die will produce about twice as many die/wafer as an 88mm2 die ;^) All other variables kept equal (defect density in particular) the smaller die will yield a higher percentage.

Don't underestimate the financial implications of such a discrepancy. When CPU's sold for $500, it didn't matter much if your production costs were $50 or $75. In a $30 CPU market, small differences in production cost will mean the difference between success and failure.

Bob,

Did you see the size of Intel's new i740 graphics chip? It's 450 mm^2 on a 0.35u process. Sounds like a typo, though. With 3.3 million transistors it must be smaller than that.

Pravin.
