You can bet if BAAT signs on a "BIG" one, "they" will push the patent
process ASAP. Probably do the leg work. They can get a "patent pending" status to cover.

Filing for a patent and having a patent approved are the alpha and omega of the patent process.

1. Filing does not guarantee you will be issued the patent.

2. Patents usually require a number of years before they are approved.

In summary, even if they file for the patent today, the patent cloud will not be removed over BAT's head for sometime--say two years. This is something that will haunt BAT for sometime to come.

Rodney -

You are both right and wrong regarding protection from patents.

As previously stated (including in a post by me) patents describe in rather great detail the very process / system that you are trying to protect. This information is then available to the masses in a very easily searchable and accessible format. I am an EE and a chief engineer for a film / video post-production & graphics facility. I have developed several complex technical products for the video industry and have researched the patent process. Believe me, without the financial muscle to back up your patent you are giving away your technology. My guess is that BAT is following this plan:

1) Develop technology - keep it very close to the chest
2) Demonstrate technology under very controlled circumstances while researching patent database for existing patents (50 pages of patent materials developed)
3) Draw in powerful backer(s) who have the clout to defend a patent
4) Once deal is signed, file for patent and let big brother(s) worry about the fight

It seems to me that that is exactly what they are doing...and though I don't like to make assumptions on hearsay, if they are indeed intent on filing for patents in the near future then I would say that that is a VERY good indicator that there is some BIG news in the works

IMO,
JohnnyH
