Communism and socialism seemed like a good idea at the time. Umpty million dead people and blighted lives later those who suffered those ideas ditched them while credulous newbies in what was the bastion of free enterprise went woke, socialist, kleptocratic, fascist, totalitarian.
120 years ago people figured out that sunlight helped reduce various illnesses. Vitamin D was discovered and recently the effect of infrared sunlight and other sources on mitochondria and melatonin production. But low melanin people such as me got caught up in the fashion, overdosed on ultraviolet light and now experience world champion melanoma, squamous and basal call cancers. 60 years ago I knew not to get burned, but I mistakenly thought being brown was protection... not so much as I thought. Brown from sun is only partial protection. Enough vitaminD and melatonin is plenty. More is not better.
Unfortunately, ideas like " Russia Russia Russia We Have to Get Putin" will be much worse than too much sunlight. Being chimpoid, most people suffer from such limbic system tribal mania, and can't do reasoning and think bigger. See right here in SI for examples.
Ideas are sticky and we have to adopt rules of thumb and outsource thinking to experts because we are all limited to only 1 kg of brainpower. Developing every action from first principles is impossible. So we're stuck with using groupthink.
Unfortunately, wrongthink is part of that process. Even more unfortunately, the groupthink is often the wrongthink, but by weight of numbers and ego they automatically deny and crush ideas that are the better and more correct newthink.
It's a hideous process but here we are.

There's not much sign of thinking that I've seen, but maybe there are enough people who started out putting up Ukraine flags, but have now realised a few more facts and have decided that they were misled, deceived, lied to, recklessly endangered, impoverished and likely to be killed. They've taken down the Ukraine flags.
My original settlement proposal was good. Now, 100,000 dead and more, hordes maimed, millions traumatised, a billion impoverished, Ukraine is going to have to give up a lot more.
