Pick up games are typically half court, it's part of the rythme of those games to score, the other team takes the ball out at somewhere around half court and play resumes, all under the same basket. Full court is different, obviously, but all the players and the refs and the coaches have played a lot of half court ball so the "muscle memory" is there in all of them. The first girl screws up (that was the easy part) and the half court reflex kicks in, other team scored, our ball, they scored over here so we must be going the other way, full court reflex back to work.

My reaction watching it was to catch the wrong basket shot and then a short period of confusion about whose ball it was and where and so on but the pace of the game brought me along, in basketball a lot of things happen that you don't dwell on or you'll miss the thing going on now.

For sure I did not see it accurately. Maybe Escher was on to something. How things appear depends on where one starts looking and what I see depends (a lot) on what I expect to see.

This discussion prompted me to learn more about that game. Apologies to those who find belaboring this topic tedious. It's from 8 years ago. Mexico v. Slovakia playing in the FIBA Under-17 World Championship for Women. Some Youtube commenters see it your way, I stand by my initial assessment. :)
