Why would Russia trust the West to honour any deal on anything?
Exactly.

There was a reasonable peace deal on the table in March until Boris Johnson told Zelensky that the Americans and Brits didn't want a deal, but rather the destruction of Russia. Russia now realizes that it is in an existential war with the West.
Why should the Russians trust the West? Because total war would mean death for everyone involved, for their families and their countries. They’ll have to trust the West - because people in the West also do not want to die. So, Russia and the West both have a huge common interest.

I hope what will happen is some sort of face saving dance - and then, an agreement not to bring on the end of the world.

I’m ready to bet on it. If I’m wrong, all bets are off anyway.
