All good points, Mq.

>>> PS... I'm surprised Russia has been as successful as they have. I thought it was an April Glaspie trap as for Saddam in Kuwait = entice them in, then have a huge turkey shoot using all mod cons superwhizbang weaponry.<<<

Yes, everyone is surprised - even though we should not have been, considering the big bucks we spend on intelligence.

Do you remember our president (kind of) implying that a “smallish” Russian incursion into Ukraine could be not a big deal? There is your April G. gambit.

Ukraine and NATO were ready - and wanted Russia to make the first move. (This may be close to mind reading, but there seems to be suggestive evidence. So, it’s not a totally invalid speculation). The timing of the escalation of the war against Donbas and other ethnic Russian enclaves also was curious - it started after the Russians already surrounded Ukraine - but were still sitting on their butts and not invading.

People say that Ukraine has the right to join any block they wanted. Yes, in theory. Or in a vacuum. In reality, they are surrounded by greater powers that do not like each other very much, see each other as a danger and as competition. Ukraine’s real choice was to either try playing the middle - and hope to turn the situation to their benefit - or to join one of the greater powers.

From what I read, Sweden agreed to host nuclear weapons in peacetime once they become members of NATO. Why? - is a mystery. Nato would be more than happy to have them anyway. This just makes them more of a target, with no benefit to their people.
