That's quite a story. Have you ever traveled to Myanmar? I almost visited around 15 years ago but my Burmese friend there got a foreign job offer he couldn't refuse before I finalized my plans. He assured me his family would take care of me and show me around but I wimped out. Was living in Thailand then for 6+ months per year and visited many neighboring countries.

The purported liberalization and political reforms look to have been a ruse. When a corrupt authoritarian junta has been in control for 60+ years they usually don't just hand over the keys. That's not to say British rule was a peach but the junta seems to have done a fine job of keeping the country poor and falling behind its neighbors. Myanmar still seems to be a vassal state of China. My understanding is there's been a big brain drain over the years for obvious reasons but a good part of the diaspora would likely return home to help rebuild if there ever were real reforms. It's a shame because it's a country rich in resources both natural and human.

An interesting thing about the USA sanctions is that forever how long they existed, we always maintained a large embassy in downtown Yangon. Forget exactly but maybe 15-20 acres? Or several city blocks. An Aussie buddy who has traveled there a few times with a diplomatic passport said there was a mini real estate bubble in Yangon when it seemed like the country might liberalize a decade ago. Unsure what ever became of that, will have to ask him.
