- 3Com's options and stock trading has traders scratching their heads. Institutions began the session buying what were out-of-the-money call options in February and March. The stock price increased and some of the contracts are now at-the-money.

A 3Com options trader at the Pacific Exchange opined that fiscal third-quarter earnings might be better than expected when results are reported in March. 3Com declined to comment on why its options and stocks were trading strongly.

"We've had a lot of buyers of the February 35 and March 32 and 35s," the options trader said.

The 3Com options trader said the implied volatilities of the contracts, particularly in March, have increased. Volatility is an indication of the likelihood the underlying stock will move in either direction. The stock is up 1 3/4 at 35 1/2 on heavy volume. Analysts noted that other networking stocks, like Cisco and particularly Cabletron Systems, are higher on the day.

Some stock analysts were a little skeptical that earnings expectations could be driving trading because the company has been trying to reduce inventories at distributors since November.

I just got DirecPC. I opted for the $19.95 plan that gives unlimited access from 6pm-6am, weekends & holidays also. They restrict the bandwidth on this plan to 200kbps. At night however, I burst as fast as 1MBPS! This is because they have the extra bandwidth available. I love it. The hardware is about $300 and they throw in $100 service credit as well as 5 hours of peak time free a month. Since I use dialup from work, I don't use the dish during the day. It works perfectly for me. I found that Earthlink works great with Hughes as far as ISP's are concerned.

I did all this because my local phone lines stink (no 56k support) and I couldn't get over 26400. I use a 56k sportster for dialup.

At the same time, I installed the direcTV. It is awesome as well.

For those that won't have cable modems or xDSL for years, this is WAY cheaper than ISDN. It is much faster as well. The only problem is it is assymmetric and you need a local ISP for uploading.

I'll be glad to answer any questions regarding the service.
