Yes I have been to Myanmar, and of course Thailand next door. There was a massive infusion of capital into Yangon once they held free elections starting in 2012. Yangon modernized at warp speed after that and tourism soared. What screwed it all up is that the government didn't think its party, the USDP, would get trounced in the elections for open seats, thereby allowing rival NLD to install the President. The problem is, their constitution assures a huge block of seats is never open, hence always occupied by someone from the military. The NLD began to demand the constitution be changed. Long story short, the military sensed it was losing control, imprisoned the president, and said wtf you gonna do about it? Then they killed or tossed in prison anyone who opposed them. To set the record straight, Myanmar is not a vassal state of China. They actually distrust China, and for good reason. Yes there was a huge brain drain, but many returned when democracy seemed to have returned. That's obviously been reversed after the coup. Anyhow, I didn't mean to get too off-topic here. In case you are wondering, yes, I think most people on SI who know me instantly recognize I do stuff for fun (but purpose) that others think is insane lol. - Jeff
