OT. I am replacing my gas furnace/AC next week. 20 years old and 2 intermittent failures this month which service guy showed me how to reset the error fault if it reoccurs. likely (but not certain) caused by circuit board, replace at $600. but what comes next? and it cannot be easily debugged further. so decided to replace the whole unit at $10K. an upgrade to 2 stage unit (full power and low power vs just on/off). SEER 16 vs 10-11 existing. The est 3% AC saving per SEER is peanuts -- maybe $80 to $100 annual. and no significant savings on heat -- combustion is just combustion (81% fuel efficiency). heat pumps too expensive.

argument tipping it in favor of unit replacement vs repair: at my age, I need one more unit. buy it now and maybe save 10% inflation cost (this is = to a tax free 10% investment). plus pocket some SEER savings and be worry free. (units up 16% in price since summer.)
