Clik! and Mavica

Let's not forget that Sony has invested tens of millions of dollars to develop and place on the market the Mavica digital camera which uses the "old" 2.44 MB floppy as its storage device! If this makes sense, then the equivalent camera with a Clik! will be a market beater. And no need to target the low end initially. $100 OEM will be enough to gain sufficient market share with mid-range $300-$600 cameras. Prices will drop drastically as volume ramps up, and even low-range cameras will come into play (remember the days when floppy drives cost well over $100?).

But keep in mind that IOM is right at the bleeding edge of new technology with Clik!. It needs to ensure ruggedness, performance and reliability before entering market full bore. So I don't mind at all the delay, provided IOM eventually delivers a sound product. Same concerns apply to Jaz2. If IOM comes through with their promises on both, no matter how long the delay, the last few months of uncertainty will soon become a forgotten footnote in history.

But they gotta deliver!

P.S. We should also not forget that Zip is now three year old technology, which IOM is using as cash cow in absence of serious market competition (forget the SyQuest hype). I would be very surprised if IOM does not have a "new and improved" model waiting in the wings.

Stan, Allen's info about the padded heads is probably relevant
to the Clik product as well. I bet they move the heads in from
the side edge like in the Zip whereas a floppy opens a window
on the disk and then the disk is moved down into contact with
the head or the head moves to meet the disk (I am not sure).
If Clik uses the Zip mechanism, it should protect the media well.
.. All the arguing about price of Clik vs. Flash mem is silly.
We are just guessing. If Clik is basically a miniature Zip,
then the design problems may be expensive as well as initial
production yields, but once ramped up the Clik drives will be
cheaper to make than the 1.4 MB floppy drives and the Clik disks
will also get about as cheap as the floppy disks. With volume
and a tiny product, cost of manufacture almost becomes irrelevant,
and the real cost is distribution, marketing, outwitting the
competition. If Clik becomes a brand as Zip has become a brand,
we are off to the races on profits.

Long on Intel and Iomega

PS: Can't get over Rockhead is back to trashing IOM while he
bought into it a few weeks ago, presumably at 8 3/4ths. And
he touted AOL like crazy in the 90's and then shorts it at $111.
What a silly guy. He says he only lost three percent. My guess
that must be $30 he lost. He will have to eat dogfood for a week.
What a winner!

>> ....clik! is to be a family of storage products: there will be an external clik that can be used in any clik!-enabled device. <<

Stan -- as long as we are just s'posin a bit about Clik! , I wanted to restate something I mentioned a few weeks ago..... IF Clik! (or any product similar in price, performance, and capacity) makes it to the mass consumer market.....it will transform the uses of the current PDA, etc. niche --ie, produce a paradigm shift in boh the nature of the products, in their uses, and in they way they interact.

So, when we look forward into this possible future niche for Clik! (or a Clik! type product) we need to envision it as something other than the current status.
