The idea would be to block cancer cells' use of telomerase to extend their telomeres. Thus, the cells would be "mortalized," and with a limited number of replications they'd be far less dangerous.
I don't know exactly what inhibitory approaches Geron and their partner, Pharmacia Upjohn, are working on to block telomerase, but my guess is they will announce a lead compound by mid-year.
For more info, I suggest you call Geron and ask to speak to one of their scientists.
