They haven't lost ground. They occupy almost all of the Donbas plus part of Zaporizhzhia. Go back and look a pre war maps.

They pulled back from their most aggressive gains, but still control about 20% of the country now.

And just as many Russian troops have been estimated to have been killed to date, as well.
I haven't seen evidence of this.

It seems that in a war of attrition the side sending 60,000 shells over would do more attriting than the side sending 6,000. Of course Russia ran out of ammunition four or five months ago so who knows.
