The gray areas represent where they advanced in 2022, and no longer control because they lost ground and were driven back. Aside from areas connecting to Crimea, Russia is essentially back to two oblasts its puppets in Donbass controlled for the last decade, with Russian troops and tanks. After a year of war and 200k dead, the war has nearly been a net wash. That's not winning by any objectively viewed account.
