X-ray man. I obviously have less valid information than you have. I remember reading that in the court jousting between MSFT and Apple that it came out that the GUI was a Xerox original, licensed to Apple and others and that MSFT has a right to it, either derived directly, from Apple or from another pathway. I did not note it in detail as it was just of passing interest at the time. Others also had pull out sideways windows instead of pull down windows. There was a flurry of GUI stuff back then modelled after Xerox and als departures from it.
