None of these railways are run like in the old days, a friend applied to be a bench carpenter and they said he wasn't qualified because he did not have his journeyman's certificate, he said didn't teaching journeyman level carpentry to journeymen qualify him? The railway said no, but he was qualified to be a train conductor if he wanted to take the two week course.

My understanding is that there are areas of track that measure the temperature of the wheels and that this information tells the operator if there are brake problems. My understanding is that this system was not used in this case. Some exemption. I've heard there were other exemptions or violations but that could be normal business, like a fix-it ticket.

All this second or third hand, I have no personal insight into freight trains. Starting to echo the Atlas Shrugged story line, eerie similarities.
