This is a case of Atmel returning to it's roots. Originally all the principles that started Atmel came from Seeq. What they did was take all their know-how to Atmel and build a better eprom and almost put Seeq out of business. In fact Seeq got out of the eprom business and is now struggling to compete in eathernet. It is total irony that Atmel now is picking at the carcass of Seeq, but I guess they are looking to diversify.

I believe Atmel's founder, George Perlegos, was also a founder of Seeq, or maybe worked there as an engineering VP. At any rate, I'm sure he is very familiar with Seeq's business and believes it is a good investment for Atmel.
