It makes sense to pay for news media. The journalists need to be paid. Social media I avoid like the plague, except Youtube which is still free and ad-free (with the browser I use - Vivaldi).

My subscription to NYT started out cheap - not so much now - more or less $250.oo a year.

I would like to get the Washington Post, Atlantic and Guardian but the cost is prohibitive.

Fox News has stated they are not a news source but an "entertainment channel" in which case Faux Spews would be a more accurate name for the company.

When I was an academic in the early days of the internet in the 1990s most Communication Studies scholars were (to me) pollyanna-ish, trumpeting how the internet would lead to the free flow of ideas and freedom and wonderfulness for all. I was in the minority who argued that government and corporate control would lead to the opposite.

Unfortunately, it appears I was right. Would that I hadn't been...
