The also-rans didn't have a chance because they weren't part of the club: You are on the right track, the only thing you are still getting wrong is that this wasn't a government conspiracy, or Bill Gates gone wild. This was capitalism at it's finest. Pfizer and Moderna were both working on mRNA technologies. mRNA could be other medicines besides vaccines, it's just that the Covid-19 pandemic was the first chance for it to show how it could create a drug, in this case a vaccine. BioNTech is a German company which is involved, but because it's not a US company it's role is a bit different. The three companies were working on similar technology and figured they could have a research alliance and the US parts of the company got government grants which is a common way for American pharma to fund their research. The worked together, the mRNA technology was ready, and the Covid-19 pandemic provided a need for a completely new drug to be developed in a hurry, that was exactly what mRNA was meant to do. The also-rans ,Merck, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and their European partners, bet on a different technology. It didn't work, or at least it didn't work in time for the Covid-19 pandemic. Their lawyers weren't interested in taking second place, and so they are trying to stall the acceptance of mRNA until their technology is as mature , that is if it ever works. A lot of money is at stake. So yes, they weren't part of the club and want to stop the game.
