The explanation of the DHCP helper maybe hasn't been too
clear to the non-techie. The premise is that maintaining
lists of IP addresses for hosts is administratively complex.
DHCP allows a host to broadcast a request to be assigned
an IP address. If the DHCP server is on the same physical
segment as this host then fine, the server will respond with
an address to use. If however the server is on the other
side of a router (layer 3) then there is a problem. One of the
functions of routers is to limit the propagation of broadcasts
to other segments. So the router will not relay the DHCP broadcast
request to the DHCP server and the host's request is lost.
The 'helper' software will recognize the special DHCP broadcasts
and forward them.

That's the feature. I do not know the status of Bay software.
