Given enough time a lot could happen. We were able to reproduce with the Neanderthals once upon a time,
and the Denisovans too, I believe. But take the case of the Mule... the offspring of the horse and donkey.
They are unable to reproduce, but just one fluke and you'd have a new species of equidae.
I would expect this kind of thing happens all the time, but we don't see it in real time.
