all, Oracle Debuts Application Server Upgrade (02/12/98; 5:49 p.m. EST) By Hakhi Alakhun El, InformationWeek Oracle unveiled at Software Development '98 (SD '98) the upgrade of its application server with enhancements for multiplatform deployment of network and Web-based applications. Positioned as a deployment and development platform, Oracle Application Server 4.0 will support Java, HTML, CORBA, and DCOM. In addition, the server will let developers manage and scale Java applications by deploying them as CORBA objects. It includes a CORBA 2.0-compliant object request broker that allows applications cartridges and network system services to be distributed as objects to multiple servers to resolve the problem of system bottlenecks. "The multiplatform support will let developers easily deploy network applications faster and easier than client-server," said Nick Kritikos, director of distributed application server consulting for Oracle at SD '98 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The server also links network applications to Oracle databases through a PL/SQL cartridge to address the complexity associated with the manual scripting needed to publish data from Oracle databases to network clients. It also features an open database connectivity (ODBC) cartridge to support all ODBC-compliant databases, a WebConnect cartridge for access to Java clients, and thin clients in mainframe legacy platforms. Oracle Application Server 4.0 is expected to be released by early March. Kritikos says pricing for the server will be slightly higher than for the previous version, which currently sells for $6,000 per server and $195 per user license.
