I’d have suggested visiting Haymarket. Lots of open air vegetable stands. I used to get pizza by the slice for a buck, served on a piece of shirt cardboard. Last time I was in Boston a few years ago, I went by and the pizza place is still there, though the pizza was $2.50 a slice. The North End? Butcher shops with pigs heads hanging in the window, great coffee shops and restaurants like Francesca’s.

The Market Place area was packed, and while visiting Faneuil Hall
That area is far more popular with tourists than natives. Most of the people you saw were probably not from Boston. Last time I was in that area was about 20 years ago with a group of out of town business colleagues.
