no border crossing to America for a week.

So, one crossing... for a week... so, you couldn't get to Costco, or buy cheap gas ?

I used to be a regular. Had industry friends in B.C. in hospitality, restaurant trade, wineries (hobbies, for me)... and used to attend their trade group meetings... often invited to speak, often staying with friends. And, unrelated to that, took large groups (~150 people) to Whistler for a weekend of skiing, on occasion... the occasional visit to Vancouver (mostly business interest for me, but, shopping, parks, zoo for wife and kids), or Victoria and Vancouver Island... Earlier in life, similar thing in Regina, and Winnipeg...

On March 16, 2020 Canada shut the border... said it would re-open at the end of May... then June, then August, September... 2021... and, finally, in October of 2022... 929 days later...

Turns out... I don't really know anyone in Canada any more. Most of those in businesses I knew... in the trade groups... aren't there any more. Those in hospitality, restaurants, and wineries... tourism driven... mostly aren't there any more... no longer at their prior addresses. Those few who are, well... "we've drifted apart"... moved on to other uses of the time that was once invested in those relationships...

On the other side of the border... similar thing... which isn't a problem for me... but certainly has been for my Canadian friends counterparts. Lot's of formerly thriving businesses south of the border... along those corridors that used to be well traveled... used to have a customer flow that included around 1/3 Canadians.

And, with another 1/3 of the flow tied to American's heading the other way... also shut down... it meant trying to survive with 1/3 the customers the businesses were geared to provide for... and were financed to provide for, while expecting the debt would be easily serviced...

So, I've found new business opportunities in result... in "right sizing" those businesses for the market... and improving them significantly while "right sizing" their obligations to make them profitable, sustainable.

I assume there may be, but have not geared for... future upside... tied to renewal of that flow across the borders...

I've not been back to Canada, yet... have no plans for that. It appears to me a vastly less inviting place... a less hospitable place... even a pretty creepy place... which is not what it used to be. A lot of angry people... and others angry at them for having a reason to be. And, you know how many Canadians have shown up in that context where I can ignore others claims about what is... and just count them myself ?

Whatever happened to

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” This country’s greatness and true genius lies in its diversity.

was a terribly brief moment I guess
