About Bakhmut - I think Big Serge explains the remarkable persistence in its defense. Ukraine is totally dependent on help from the outside - therefore, they must remain in a “performative” mode. For as long as they show results - or, at least, heroic resistance - foreigners will want to help them. That’s why they conducted those offensives, which were very costly - as well as defend places like Bakhmut. People criticized Z for doing those things - but, those bloody events play a crucial role in keeping the West interested.
