[DMT standard with ITU]

Enjoyed the Jack Siegel anecdote and the sushi suggestion. Kids coming home this week-end, so may just come in handy.

Here's some news that just hit my mailbox:

DSL Standard Moves Ahead

The International Telecommunications Union yesterday took a
step toward making G.lite, the recently proposed low-speed,
consumer Digital Subscriber Line technology, a standard.

Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, members of a DSL working
group within the ITU's Study Group 15 agreed to use Discrete
Multitone (DMT) encoding to deliver the DSL service over
common telephone lines. DMT is widely used throughout the
world. By choosing an encoding scheme that is widely used
and whose transmission properties are well know, industry
experts believe this will simplify much DSL equipment. For
instance, many equipment companies already have staff with
expertise in designing systems that use DMT.

The group working on the standard hopes to complete all of
the technical specifications for G.lite by October. Four other
meetings are planned between now and October to accomplish
this goal. By Salvatore Salamone
