Rubin plays down fear of foreign Treasury sales:

WASHINGTON, Feb 12 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin on Thursday played down worries about any potential liquidation of U.S. Treasury securities by foreign holders, saying such sales might be
temporarily disruptive but would not have a long-lasting impact.

''I think our markets can absorb whatever those outside the United States decide to sell as long as people have confidence in our markets and our economy,'' Rubin told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan also played down concerns.

''I wouldn't worry about it,'' he said, unless the fundamentals determining bond yields were to change significantly because of a change in the inflation outlook or other factors.
