My grandmother used to drive a horsedrawn milkwagon down past Castro to the market (on Market St, of course). In that time all of Noe Valley (upper Market area) which was only built out to about Castro was the Italian speaking sector. Some of the hills above were leased by my great grandfather from the Spanish Land Grant holder to run milk cattle. You know, the "worthless" land up around Twin Peaks that was too hilly and too foggy to be good for much else.
