It's my understanding that there are about 3 or 4 "GOOD" core decoder cores that various companies implement or base their chips on.

Cube's is proprietary and so are the others. (??)
Some are good and some just get the job done; if you don't mind a flicker or a blocking flash here and there :-)

My guess on "why Cube then?" ...is the fact that encoding is REALLY hard, like 100X more complicated than decoding. If ultimately we move twards a DVD-Ram of some sort, then encoding is needed big time. Single chip, low power, etc, etc.

SOOOOOO....If I'm Mr. Big Computer guy and I like the Dvd-ram idea, it would make sense to do biz with those having the "next" technology now. Why create a whole new deal...when you can buy it at X today and you know that price is going to Y tomorrow.
