Wharfie,
Batteries, or maybe a hydrogen fuel cell
One of my coworkers was talking about his Tesla Power Wall setup, which cost him $20K.

The problem with that, though, is how much of the battery capacity to dedicate toward supplementing the solar panels, and how much to save for blackouts. I'm not sure if a $20K setup allows my coworker to go completely off the grid.

The hydrogen fuel cell does sound like a good option, though, but I almost see no infrastructure supporting any semblance of a hydrogen economy here. Just one gas station in the area has a hydrogen hookup.

We'll be lucky to have all of this in two decades, much less by 2035. And PG&E will STILL be trying to keep up their "crumbling infrastructure."
