Lucent has made it clear they won't be nibbling. tech and lower end lan would not fit as well as asnd with the leading edge internet growth technology That's ridiculous. First, 3Com owns their "low end" technology, and both end of the connection. Ascend is mercy to late and half-baked Rockwell technology. Lucent believes in controlling their technology. That's what allowed rivals Lucent and 3Com to immediately begin interoperability testing of their respective v.90 implementations. Where was Rockwell? Second, while both companies have their strong products, 3Com dominates in far more categories than does Ascend, and their domestic and worldwide distribution channels are a major asset relative to Ascend. BTW, I happen to be long both companies at the moment.
