It greated more demand for smaller lines. Once profit margins were hurt the companies wanted more bang for the buck with more chips per wafer and more profit in higher DRAM capacity and faster chip speeds.

I'd believe it would be the same case now. The only major difference is the money immediately available to equip the fabs. Asia was flying in 1995-1996.
