At this point I can't give any "factual" answer to your question. But I can say the decision was undoubtedly based on a cost not effort factor. It's cheaper to produce an 8 meg card than a 12 meg card. I'd wager they bet on outmarketing their competition.

Please understand by "marketing" I mean the ability to put their product in front of the customer onto the coveted store shelves. I've never seen a commercial and few print ads. The 3dfx cards have been sold, by word of mouth, friend to friend, coworker to coworker, magazine review to reader. And if one chooses not to purchase what's on the store shelves then one must be capable, comfortable and patience enough to make an online or mail-order purchase.

In my opinion they have either slightly misjudged the mentality of the "initial" market--More is always better!

And/or, maybe they simply didn't figure on CREAF and its marketing muscle being FIRSTEST with the MOSTEST or even at all. Remember CREAF missed the first 3dfx boat!

Of course others are and will make 12 meg cards, but CREAF will/might be FIRST and none of the other manufacturers have the marketing muscle of DIMD or CREAF.

BTW, someone on another thread posted that CREAF also has Exclusive use of the "Voodoo 2" nomiker as well. It's printed on their packaging unlike DIMD. Very interesting....

lml,

How much more design, testing, etc. would it take for DIMD to come out with a 16MB board?

12MB is the max. configuration for the Voodoo2.
