The notion that Russia "was supposed to win the war pretty quickly" is not correct if one is looking at Russia's intentions rather than US media stories.

Russia's aim was to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine according to their statement for the SMO, and they have been saying that consistently.

Their initial foray into Ukraine was to incentivize Zelensky to sign a treaty committing Ukraine to follow the 2014 Minsk accords. That treaty was near complete in negotiations in Istanbul then PM Boris Johnson and US Defense Sec'y Lloyd Austin visited Kiev and advised Zelensky to not sign the treaty and to continue the war.

As the recent "leaks" revealed, the US has been commanding the Ukraine Army in absentia since then.
