That was the fellows point exactly . The guy on the trading floor said the shorts expected a weaker market to cover in and didn't get it.

Yes, this is the long weekend and so the market is selling up at the close.

Market makers in many issues have gone short to supply the influx of new orders, so they're buying to close their position for the long weekend.

They expected the market to sell off, but its becoming very clear this is the beginning of at least a few months of strong upside.
