I don't mind "the latest thing" when it makes sense. Still, with the possibility of minus 15 F at rare times, we'd need a backup source. When I went to firewood as a primary source, I discovered that even the oil burner needs backup heat when it gets really cold - we had to put supplementary electric heaters on it to get it to fire up again. Firewood heats the house more evenly though - no cycling, and of course is quieter.

I'll be getting more feedback on heat pumps locally, and thanks for your details. I like the idea with heating oil getting so expensive. However, I get the impression that this decision path is being driven artificially in some ways. So meanwhile, I'll be BURNING WOOD whenever I can. (All caps for the watermelon people listening in.)

As a bonus, I get lots of exercise in the winter!
